Hi Everyone,
Keep it Simple !
In my quest to get the most exposure possible for iJamr musicians and advertisers I attended the SSRM convention in Las Vegas.
The acronym stands for Scarborough Sales Research and Marketing.
Scarborough’s institute researches and analyzes markets and market segments. The results are then utilized by television stations, newspapers, radio stations and magazines in their approach to advertisers as to why a particular company is best suited for their advertising dollars. I found the lectures at the convention most instructive and mostly attended by people pertaining to the marketing / analysis departments of industry giants such as Coca Cola, Univision, La Opinion, Macy’s, NASCAR, T-Mobile, Google, Starbucks just to name a few.
The opening session was of particular interest to me as I immediately saw how it could help all of us musicians, participating websites with iJamr advertisers and this publisher in our quest for Success.
The lecture was particularly focused on How to make an idea Stick and the message was pretty simple. So simple that as Sherlock Holmes would have said “Elementary…”
Yes it all boiled down to not falling prey to too much knowledge. Simply put, a doctor, a musician, an engineer, a scientist may speak in a jargon familiar to them but simply totally incomprehensible to the public. A jargon such that it may make them feel good about their own knowledge or make them feel special but which in fact leaves most of the general public out of the loop. Specialized people, so specialized that they have forgotten that at one point in time they themselves did not know all that stuff that made them to be specialists today.
Bottom line, they are so good at what they do that they do not communicate anymore. They’re way out there. They’ve lost track of the core of their message. Their songs are so convoluted, try to be so esoteric or sound so intelligent that they lack meaning and pathos and as a consequence of not being concrete enough, loose their mass appeal. They’re empty to most of the public. They don’t grab you by the…. Well you know what I mean. They simply don’t stick.
For this reason alone I was very happy to come back and write this little piece. If anything can help most of us, including yours truly is that we’ve got to keep it simple and got to go to the root of it. Our songs will then grab the public as they did at one point in time. But I’m afraid that even such a simple statement might be construed as passé and too simplistic. I’m afraid that simplicity IS the answer to a life which we relish at complicating.
The man who gave this most instructive lecture is Dan Heath. I suggest ya’ll get the book he wrote with his brother Chip “Made to Stick” as it spells SUCCESS for all of us.
