Music in your sleep !

Kate Ashby-Craft

Raise your hand if you've ever written a song in your sleep. You know, I feel retarded now, because there are probably a few of you out there.  So put your hands down and keep me from feeling stupid!  The point is, I haven't written a song in my sleep and neither has the majority of the population.

Kate-Ashby Craft, singer/songwriter, is not a part of the majority. She has experienced a lot in her life thus far, and she's definitely not looking to stop now.  Kate has written a sleepy song, I mean, a song from sleep inspiration once, yes; but her major strength and claim to fame is her unique mezzo-soprano voice.

It all started at age 10 when Kate's mom enrolled her in singing lessons in her hometown, Halifax, Nova Scotia.  A little…. Alright… Probably more than a little classical training she had plus a lot of talent, some operas and operettas behind her (ie. Cinderella, Hansel & Gretel), and the girl was on her way!

At around age 19, Kate attended Dalhousie University, which is also located in her hometown of Halifax.  Here, she majored in Biology because she decided she hated music!  Nooo,  she didn't, come on!   I was just seeing if you were still awake.

Her focus was actually in vocal performance and theater, and she was able to do a lot of stage acting while in attendance there.  If she hadn't been offered a singing part on the “Sonny Lee Show” in Montreal straight out of school, she probably would’ve pursued the acting field.  Instead, she went where the gigs called here though, and they always seemed to call her for her voice.  Which is good, cause at least they were a Callin', right?   I don't know why I'm even asking “You” questions, or talk as if “You're” gonna answer me. “You” aren't even here, so what am I doing asking such a useless question? There I go again . . . I digress….

Back to Kate.  After moving from voice gig to voice gig, she decided to switch things up a bit, so she began writing and recording her own music.  With a love for jazz, and blues, and country etc., she had it in her to create such a diverse collection of musical inspiration. I don't even know how to explain her style.  You just have to listen to it to understand what I mean about widespread diversity.

Kate says she doesn't set her heart on a particular feel or mood when she writes. She simply lets the song dictate itself to take her there.

Other than loving and making music, Kate-Ashby Craft loves dedicating her time to a few other things in her home of Stratford, Ontario.  She loves her husband Mark, her cat Rourke, nature and the environment around her.  What I mean by nature is that she enjoys giving back to wildlife by planting trees and shrubs around her home.  It's a past-time of hers, and she says it's her small way of giving back to the environment.

Go have a listen to KAC's  (It's almost chicken . . . if it weren't for the middle letter) music, and have a look-see at her awards and life accomplishments thus far.   Her website is www.kateashbycraft.com. Keep showing your support and love for her and for all things music!

Enjoy your day!!
